| Grades/Transcripts for Students with an IEPA school district may not identify special education classes on a high school student’s transcript to indicate that the student is receiving modifications in the general classroom. However, course designations with more general connotations that do not suggest special education programs/classes (e.g., “Basic”, “Level 1”, “Practical”, etc.) is allowed. A school district can use an asterisk or other symbols on a transcript to designate a modified curriculum in general education provided the grades and courses for all students can be identified in the same manner.
A modified grading system can be used for a student with a disability who receives special education services if the grading system is also used for the general student population.
Grades can not be modified and eligibility for honors awards can not be decided on the basis of special education status alone.
The IEP must indicate the need for alternative grading in the “Adaptations” section of the IEP.
When a student with a disability takes a general education class for no credit, the student may be excluded from grading and may be evaluated based on the IEP goals and objectives.
Collaboration of general and special education teachers in grading a student with a disability is allowed.
A school can disclose that a student has taken special education classes to a post-secondary institution when the parent and student have knowledge of what information is on the transcript and have been consent to release the information.
