Goals & Objectives
Goals must include the following components:

DIRECTION of change: increase, decrease, maintain

SKILL or BEHAVIOR: written language skills, talking out 5 times per hour

PRESENT LEVEL: FROM writing only phrases, FROM talking out 5 times per hour

EXPECTED LEVEL: TO writing complex sentences, TO talking only with permission.

Sample Goals: (One goal for each identified special education need)


  • Student will increase reading comprehension skills from recalling details to relating sequence, cause and effect, setting, goal and outcome.


  • Student will decrease use of math aids from using manipulatives to solve all math
    problems to completing math assignments with paper and pencil.


  • Student will maintain attention span to a continuation of concentration during academic time.

    Objectives must include the following components: (At least 2 objectives per goal)

    BEHAVIOR TO BE PERFORMED BY STUDENT: read words in isolation, write a descriptive sentence of at least 7 words.

    CONDITIONS: When given a list of 100 Dolch Sight Words, When given a story starter,

    CRITERIA: 90% accuracy, 4 out of 5 times

    EVALUATION PROCEDURES: daily frequency count, chart by teacher

    Sample Objectives:


  • Given a list of the first 100 Dolch Sight Words, Andre will read words in isolation with 90% accuracy as charted by teacher.


  • Given a reading passage at the beginning of 2nd grade level, Andre will read at a fluency rate of 90 correct words/minute as charted by teacher.


  • Given a reading passage at the beginning of 2nd grade level, Andre will answer 5 comprehension questions with at least 80% accuracy as charted by teacher.


  • When presented with reading materials explaining banking procedures, health care services, public transportation systems and career awareness, Crystal will give a realistic oral response to 4 of 5 questions in each area based on teacher judgment.


  • When presented with 10 problems requiring life-skill application of a math process, Crystal will calculate distance, sums and differences of currency with decimals, and measurement of fraction amounts of common goods (e.g. gas, foods, miles, etc.) with 80% accuracy based on teacher record.


  • When participating in community and family activities, Tou will identify at least 5 examples from classroom discussions related to banking procedures, health care services, public transportation systems and career awareness as determined by teacher evaluation of participation in classroom discussions.


  • When given a topic pertaining to jobs, community and careers, Carver will write at least 2 paragraphs describing an event or place with a topic sentence and supporting details with 75% accuracy in capitalization, punctuation and spelling as measured by work samples.


  • During classroom instructional times of up to 30 minutes, Bart will maintain attention without talking out or leaving his seat more than 2x based on teacher record. 7/16/03
