Assistive Technology and Services
The need for assistive technology (AT) must be considered for every student regardless of the disability whenever a new IEP is written.  Assistive technology must be provided when the IEP team determines that AT is necessary for a student to make progress on IEP goals and objectives.  Assistive technology is defined as a "device" as well as a "service".

Two tools are available for use when considering AT.  The "Consideration of Assistive Technology Worksheet" and the "Assistive Technology Consideration Guide". (see below for link) Use the Guide if a) the team is unsure if the student needs AT or b) the team is not knowledgeable about the range of AT options.

1. Assistive Technology Device: any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of a student with a disability.
2. Assistive Technology Service: any service that directly assists a student with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device including:

  • Evaluation of the student’s needs and technology
  • Purchasing, leasing, or providing devices
  • Selecting, designing, fitting, customizing, adapting, applying, maintaining, repairing, or replacing of devices
  • Training or technical assistance for professionals, employers, or other individuals who provide services to, employ, or are substantially involved with the student
  • Training or technical assistance for the student or, when appropriate, training the family
  • Coordinating and using other therapies and interventions with devices

When to Consider Assistive Technology
1. Referral
2. Evaluation
3. IEP/IFSP Development
4. Implementation
5. Progress Review

How to Consider Assistive Technology: AT Consideration Worksheet
1. Use the SETT framework (Think Student, Environment, Tasks, Tools)
2. Ask Key Questions: Is the student making progress?  Is the student currently using AT
successfully?  Is the team unsure if the student needs AT?
3. Use Assistive Technology Consideration Guide if more information is needed
4. Contact Assistive Technology Team if needed at 293-8923

Where to Include Assistive Technology on the IEP

Special education service and related services: Include information on training, storage, technical assistance to keep the system or device functioning for the student.

PLEP Statements: Include information regarding how the student’s cognitive ability and motor ability may impact the use of assistive technology. Include information about the use of computer or software for instruction, communication devices or strategies, portable notetakers, tape recorders, etc.

Goals and Objectives: Include assistive technology when a student is learning to use a device or when a student uses the device or system to complete tasks.

Evaluation: Include information regarding the device or system the student needs to use.

Adaptations: Include all devices, even the low tech items (e.g. pencil grip) which the student needs to meet IEP goals.

IMPORTANT: Document your consideration of assistive technology in at least one of these IEP sections. If the IEP team decides that assistive technology is not needed for the student, this decision should be noted in the adaptations section.
